Creating a dieline

  • Recreate the shape over the artwork on it's own layer called dieline (consider using pathfinder to generate exact shape)
  • Covert to a 2 point stroke and use a spot color that contrasts greatly with the artwork
  • The dieline should be extracted from the printing, but to be sure to select the dieline stroke and go to windows>attributes and check overprint stroke
  • Check what you have by going to window>separations preview check Overprint preview and turn off the eyeball for CMYK
  • To create a bleed:
    • Window>transform add +.25 to the original dimensions in the width and height field
  • For more complex shapes consider using object>path>offset path on a duplicate layer
  • Use the pen to intersect the bleed area then use pathfinder - minus front (for the example file)
